Social Bookmarking Sites

The social bookmarking site is a new phenomenon. In the web's infancy, the majority of web sites  were found by visiting a links directory,  that was carefully segmented by topic and subtopic. As the size of the Internet and the number of installed sites increased, search engine technology advanced to provide much more relevant and timely information about what each site was all about, and made an attempt to report on how relevant that information was in relation to the search engine term someone was entering. In recent years, a growing number of Internet searchers have abandoned the search engine altogether as their search tool of choice, in favor of social bookmarking sites.

These sites ask their own members to collect and rank sites (called bookmarks, just like a "favorite" in your browser), in order to provide timely information and ratings to other members regarding the location and "travel-worthiness" of a site. Business owners are finally beginning to discover the traffic-generation capabilities of having a large presence established on these social bookmarking communities.
